Use of Cryotherapy Results in Higher Success Rate for Producing Clean Hops

The NCPN-Hop program at Clean Plant Center Northwest has dramatically increased throughput and the production of clean hop plants through the adoption of cryotherapy as the primary virus elimination method. With training from scientists at the USDA-ARS Clonal Germplasm, CPCNW has been able to develop and optimize a procedure that increased virus elimination success rates to 91% and aided in eliminating some recalcitrant viruses. This resulted in the successful release of 15 lines as clean (G1) plants in the last year, and because of the higher success rates, made more efficient use of resources.
