Given the size of the CPCNW’s tree fruit program, tightening up their workflow process was the key to releasing more plants in the last six years than in twenty years prior. The Center, which also manages two other NCPN crops, has been developing a system of scheduling and workflows to ensure that plants receive the diagnostic and virus elimination assays that they need to be cleaned up and released as G1.
Relying heavily on LIMS and quality management systems, each plant is tracked and tested on a seasonal basis to optimize pathogen detection, while the adoption of multiple therapeutic techniques (cryotherapy, thermotherapy, chemotherapy and meristem culture) increases the likelihood of successful virus elimination. These processes have allowed CPCNW to optimize resource usage, essential for the operation of a multi-crop Center in an era of reduced funding.
